Gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed's son, Asad, was killed in an encounter in Jhansi at around 12 pm today.
The encounter was carried out by the Special Task Force (STF) team of UP Police, led by Deputy SPs Navendu and Vimal. 12 officials were involved in the encounter.
Asad was wanted in Umesh Pal murder case. His aide Ghulam, also wanted in the same case, was also killed in encounter. They were both carrying pistols and were killed in retaliatory firing.
After the encounter, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister praised all the officials involved in the encounter.
Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM KP Maurya congratulated UP STF after former MP Atiq Ahmed's son Asad and aide were killed in a police encounter. UP Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak said, "We wanted justice to be delivered through the courts, but they (Asad and his accomplice) fired on the police, resulting in the encounter. I congratulate the UP Police on the successful operation."
After getting the news of Asad's encounter, Atiq Ahmed broke down inside the court.
"This is a tribute to my son," said Shanti Devi, mother of slain lawyer Umesh Pal.
Umesh Pal's wife, Jaya Pal, thanked Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for "instant justice".
Police recovered British Bull Dog revolver and pistol from Asad and his aide's possession.
A case was registered against Ahmad, Ashraf, their family members, and others based on a complaint filed by Umesh Pal's wife, Jaya Pal, on February 25.
Notably, the encounter comes just a day after Atiq told media that his entire family has been ruined. He had said that he is still alive because of media as he was being taken to Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj from Sabarmati Jail on Wednesday. The 60-year-old was brought to Prayagraj for a court hearing in connection with a criminal case. Asked if his life in under threat, the former Uttar Pradesh MLA and Lok Sabha member said, aap logo ka shukriya (thanks to all of you). It's because of you (the media) that I am safe.”
Ahmed, a former Samajwadi Party leader, has been lodged in Sabarmati jail since June 2019. He was moved to the Gujarat jail after the Supreme Court directed that the former MP from UP’s Phulpur be shifted to a high-security jail in Gujarat.
